Kerala Labour Movement

In 1993, a self help group was formulated for building construction activities, under KIDS. It functions in groups of 10 to 20 members in each SHG. There are 65 SHGs under the Diocese, functioning within the various parishes. Director, KIDS Kottapuram, and elected representatives from among the SHG leaders form the Central committee that controls the functioning of the SHGs.

When KLM was launched in 2010, this group came to be known in the banner of KLM. The group consists of workers from the serious sectors including construction, screw pine weaving, fishing, tailoring etc. They used to conduct weekly meetings; the SHG leaders met every month, and conducted orientation classes. In order to enable a sustainable living, KIDS Director facilitates the availability of bank loans, chitts and related options. This has enabled various groups to attain economic stability by its own.

Annual audits are conducted in the SHGs, which is supported by KIDS. They also celebrate anniversaries, present the accounts on a timely basis, gather during festive occasions and donate necessary items to the needy from their earnings.

The Mediclaim scheme jointly done by KIDS and Insurance company was a great support for SHG members. KLM pension was introduced to safeguard their future. Through this scheme, many of them received accidental benefits, death benefits,/scholarships for employees' children etc. Apart from the support received from KIDS during the challenging time of floods and Corona pandemic, these SHGs were able to render help to many a family.

Though the units with rich work experience have been able to achieve self-sustenance, they still receive all assistance, advice and help from Fr Paul Thomas, Director, KIDS, as and when required.
