In 2014, soon after taking over his charge as Director of KIDs, Fr. Nixon Kattassery made a very detailed survey the Disabled in the 4 zones of Ernakulam and Thrissur districts where KIDS intervene. It shows that there are many people with disability in and around the coastal areas and they generally belong to the economically and socially poor back ground.
The aim of the Differently-Abled Department is to extend support to vulnerable sections of society,
Such as persons that are physically disabled widows in need, those who are destitute, and the elderly.
Interventions for persons that are physically disabled include:
1. SHGs for persons that are physically disabled
2. Micro-enterprises for persons with physical disabilities
3. Skill-building and up-gradation training in natural fibre craft.
4. Distribution of artificial limbs and wheelchairs Information and awareness for the parents of Persons with disabilities on care and support.
5. Seminar for Handicapped Persons
6. Distribution of Medical assistance and Educational support
7. Enabling Environment Programme for the patents of disabled children.
