Athijeevan - Overcoming natural calamity 2019
In order to lend a helping hand to flood survivors and motivate them to undertake income generation activities on 2nd of April 2019, under Athijeevan project supported by Caritas India, KIDS distributed livestock such as goat, duck and hens and tailoring machines to 500 families. Women beneficiaries were selected from families affected by flood water and residing in coastal areas of Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. It was a joint initiative of Caritas India/KIDS for flood affected families to overcome natural calamities with enhanced income and quality life.
ATHIJEEVAN - LIVELIHOOD PROJECT SUPPORTED BY CARITAS INDIA 2019
With the objective lending a helping hand to the survivors of devastating deluge and motivate them for starting income generating activities on 23rd March 2019, a programme was organized at KIDS campus. On this occasion livestock such as goat, duck and hens and tailoring machines were distributed to more than 500 women beneficiaries affected by flood water in the coastal areas of Ernakulam and Thrissur district. It is an initiative of Caritas India to make flood affected families to overcome the catastrophe. Others joined hands included Good Shepherded Sisters, Tamilnadu Social Service Society and Kerala Social Service Forum.
Fr. Paul Thoams Kalathil chaired the event while Handicraft promotion officer Ms. Kumari Kathaerin Jose was the chief guest. Project presentation was done by Mrs. Siby Paulose, Project Officer Caritas India. Sr. Shobha Thattin, Superior from Good Shepherd Society distributed in kind support to the beneficiaries. KIDS assistant Director, Fr. Cleetus Kochikkatt welcomed all guests and Fr. Sibin Kallarakal proposed vote of thanks.
SUCCOR TO FLOOD WATER AFFECTED FAMILIES
The impact of catastrophe was so severe that many people became homeless within a fraction of seconds. Hundreds of Houses were either perished completely beyond repairing or destroyed partially. It was really a painful experience for everyone. KIDS did its part well with humanitarian aid by supporting most needy 35 families to construct foundation for the new house. It undertook foundation laying work and got it completed under its supervision.
SET UP TEMPORARY SHELTERS
Temporary shelter was put up for 30 families whose houses were perished during flood.The shed was built up in 150 square feet area. This shelter provided temporary relief to poor families whose houses were destroyed due to torrential rain and deluge. These temporary shelters have been built in such a manner to convert it as kitchen once we build new houses for them. More than 48 new houses for the selected families have been constructed and handed over.
NAMMAL MUNNERUM (WE SHALL OVERCOME) 2018
On 21st September 2018, a joint programme was organized for the flood affected children with the objective of helping them to overcome traumatized situation and bring them back to normalcy in collaboration with Balasangam Kodungallur Area Committee. In this program, children studying from 5th to 10th class were given counseling services. They were given opportunity to put up stage shows to bring out their hidden talents. Facilitators provided insights to students to overcome their frustration, distress and hardships were highly appreciated by all.
SUCCOR TO OKHI AFFECTED FAMILIES
Okhi cyclone hit families were supported to rebuild their destroyed houses. As part of this program, three selected beneficiaries were helped to construct new house. Fr. Paul Thomas, Executive Director, laid foundation for 3 houses at Kara, Eriyad and Azhikode areas. This project has been jointly implemented by Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference (KCBC) and KIDS. Others present on the occasion were parish priests from neighboring churches namely.
OKHI CYCLONE AND RELIEF WORK
The most time and energy consuming activities which KIDS undertook in 2017 was the relief work for the OKHI cyclone victims. The first step was to support them with food and shelter. Bishop Rev. Joseph Karikkassery personally visited the victims and consoled them, promising his full support to rehabilitate them. It was well appreciated by the people.
