Cultivation of Screw-pine
As the mentality and life style of people are changing the culture of the people are also changing fast. The new generation prefer to have white collar jobs and a land where people were depending on natural resources like screw pine, the plant is no more a raw material for the households and so we need to look for alternatives to keep the plant growing. For the expansion and availability of raw material at local level, KIDS promote cultivation of different natural fibre varieties with the help of women artisans in the cluster.
This makes a sustainable source of income for the women members from economically backward communities and the processing is done by another group of artisans where the Craft Based Resource Centre coordinates these activities, so that the artisans can collect raw materials from the Centre. As the demand for the natural fibre products are on the increase, we found our new initiative prudent as well as relevant.
Women Artisans’ Card for the screw pine weavers
The natural fibre craft department not only offer the artisans employment, but also it supports them with other benefits linked to Government schemes like pension, insurance claim and scholarship for children’s education. This is given through the Artisans Identification Card
Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID)
The intervention of Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID) in our natural fibre sector was yet another boom for our artisans especially for the Differently-abled artisans. They came to support us not by just placing order for the products. They organized a special work shop to honour our artisans especially the differently-abled.
